SonKhran Festival in NongkhaiSongkhran Festival, or Thai Buddhist New Year, is celebrated for 3 days in April and when people splash water on each other, by Buddhist tradition, but also to refresh themselves, as it is the hottest period of the year in Thailand.
In Nongkhai this festival is very important and spectacular and features the bathing of the legendary golden Buddha in the royal temple of Wat Pho Chai.
We invite you to participate in this event and to discover a mixed program of activities in Nongkhai and its region, such as swimming in the Mekong River with the local people, sharing the life of Isan farmers or trekking in the mountains of a wildlife reserve.

Day 1: Bangkok - Udon Thani - Nongkhai

  • Early morning: meet yourSunset over the Mekong in Nongkhai
    English-speaking local assistant at your hotel as agreed.
  • Transfer to Hualamphomg rail station.
  • Departure by train to Udon Thani.
  • During the journey you will get an introduction to into Thai culture and language, and appreciate the tropical landscape.
  • Transfer from Udon Thani to Nongkhai at the end of the afternoon (1hr).
  • Dinner and overnight stay at the Nongkhai Resort Hotel.

Day 2: Nongkhai - Nong Patana village - Nongkhai

  • Breakfast at your hotel.Rice harvesting in Nong Patana
  • Transfer to an elementary school in Nongkhai. Presentation and meeting with the children and get involved in activities with them (drawing, singing, games).
  • Transfer to Nong Patana village (1h30).
  • Isan lunch with a family and learn how the food is cooked with the mother.
  • Discover and participate in the daily activities of the village such as salt collection and rice harvesting.
  • Dinner at a restaurant on the way back.
  • Overnight stay at the Nongkhai Resort Hotel.

Day 3: Nongkhai (Songkhran Festival)

  • Breakfast at your hotel.Songkhran festival at the Thai Lao Friendship Bridge
  • Proceed to Wat Pho Chai temple to celebrate the Buddhist New Year.
  • Transfer to the Mekong riverbank, under the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge.
  • Lunch in a restaurant on the beach.
  • Swimming in big inner tubes with local people (please keep your clothes on to respect the Thai habit): a unique experience!
  • Transfer to Nonghai Resort Hotel.
  • Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel.



Day 4: Nong Khai – Kham Pia village (Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary)

  • Breakfast at your hotel (you can leave some personal belongings at the hotel to lighten your luggage).A Hornbill in Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Transfer to the village of Kham Pia, in Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary (3hr).
  • Lunch on arrival.
  • Settle in and rest in your home stay.
  • Short trek to scenic viewpoint of the sanctuary for a presentation of Phu Wua by the local guide.
  • Dinner at a restaurant in the village of Bung Klaa.
  • Transfer back to Kham Pia and overnight stay in the village.

Day 5: Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Breakfast at your home stay.A Buddhist monk at Tham Hook cave
  • Transfer to the forest to trek to the waterfalls of Cha Nan and Tham Foon.
  • Picnic at Tham Foon Waterfall.
  • Butterfly and bird watching while trekking. Pick up of some herbs and plants in the forest to use for your dinner and learn how it is cooked.
  • On the way, stop at Tham Hook cave to meet the monks and see the elephant bones. (picture)
  • Dinner and camp in the forest for the night.

Day 6: Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Trek back to the village to rest.Elephant platform at Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Solar cooking: presentation and demonstration.
  • Meet with the children in Kham Pia’s school. (optional)
  • Lunch in the village and tasting of solar-cooked food.
  • Trek to the elephant tree houses. Afternoon in the trees to watch the elephants, if you’re lucky, or to learn more about Thai wildlife.
  • Dinner and overnight stay in the tree houses.





Day 7: Mekong River – Kham Pia village

  • Trek back to the village to have breakfast The Mekong
    and rest.
  • Transfer to the Mekong River for a boat tour.
  • Lunch at a restaurant with view of the Mekong.
  • Transfer to Kham Pia village. Visit a rubber tree plantation and learn the process with the local guide. Watch and learn how to weave cloth and baskets with the local artisans.
  • Dinner and overnight stay in the village.

Day 8: Phu Tok – Phu Wua Wildlife Sanctuary

  • Breakfast at your home stay.Phu Tok massive sandstone mountain
  • Transfer to Phu Thok, a massive sandstone mountain covered by a series of walkways and with a magnificent viewpoint of Phu Wua. Just before the top you can stop in a cave temple.
  • Lunch at a restaurant on the way.
  • Transfer to Tham Phra Waterfall. Go for a swim.
  • Transfer to Kham Pia.
  • Dinner and stay overnight in the village.




Day 9: Kham Pia village – Nongkhai

  • Breakfast at your home stay.Meet buddhist monks at Nonghkai Boudhist University
  • Transfer to Nongkhai Resort Hotel. Relax and rest.
  • Thai cooking lesson at openmind projects training center and lunch.
  • Transfer to a Buddhist University in Nongkhai. Visit and meet the monks.
  • Dinner cruise on the Mekong River aboard a Nagarina boat.
  • Overnight stay at the Nongkhai Resort Hotel.


Day 10: Nongkhai – Bangkok

  • Breakfast at your hotel.Sala Kaeo Ku Park in Nongkhai
  • Proceed to visit Sala Kaeo Ku Park. (picture)
  • Transfer to Tha Sadej Indochinese Market for a lunch with view on the Mekong River.
  • Visit the market (and a nearby nice antique shop).
  • Free afternoon.
  • Baci ceremony
  • 18:00 PM Transfer to Nongkhai railstation.
  • 19:15 PM Departure of the night train.
  • Arrival in Bangkok in the morning.
  • Pick up to hotel or airport.

Tip:
During the 3 days of Songkhran you will have a lot of water splashed onto you, so be sure to keep your passport and money in a plastic bag.
